Measuring Coating Thickness

Measuring Ceramic Thickness, Part 1

At Gloss Riders, we believe that understanding the intricacies of your vehicle’s paintwork is crucial to maintaining its pristine condition. Recently, we conducted a detailed ceramic thickness and coating thickness measurement on a 2021 Dodge Challenger Hellcat in the stunning Hellraisin color. Using a precision thickness gauge, we recorded a thickness of 128 microns on the body panel before applying a ceramic spray. This measurement provides valuable insight into the care and preservation needed to keep the vehicle’s finish flawless. Note that we’ve already paint corrected the area to remove a prior coating.

The Importance of Paint Thickness

Paint thickness plays a significant role in the overall appearance and longevity of your car’s exterior. A uniform and adequate paint thickness ensures that the underlying metal is well-protected from environmental elements, preventing rust and corrosion. The same goes for your ceramic thickness. For car enthusiasts and owners of high-performance vehicles like the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, maintaining this protective layer is paramount.

The Role of Ceramic Coatings

A common question among car owners is the impact of ceramic coatings on paint thickness. At Gloss Riders, we have found that ceramic coatings typically add no more than 1-2 microns to the paint layer, though we acknowledge some manufacturers claim up to five microns. While this might seem minimal, the true value of a ceramic coating lies in its unique properties.

Ceramic coatings are designed to create a hydrophobic layer over the existing paint. This layer significantly enhances water and dirt repellency, making it easier to keep your vehicle clean. The microscopic angle at which this layer sits on the paint surface creates a slick, glossy finish that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides additional protection against minor scratches and chemical contaminants.

Why Measure Ceramic Thickness?

Regularly measuring the thickness of your ceramic coating is an excellent practice for any car owner, particularly those who invest in high-performance or luxury cars. Knowing the thickness of your ceramic layer can help you:

  1. Determine Coating Health: Identify areas that may require attention or reapplication.
  2. Optimize Maintenance: Tailor your car care routine to the specific needs of your vehicle’s ceramic coating.
  3. Prevent Over-Polishing: Avoid excessive polishing that could wear down the coating, leading to potential damage.

Our Experience with the Challenger

The 2021 Dodge Challenger in Hellraisin is a prime example of a vehicle that benefits from meticulous paint and ceramic care. By measuring the ceramic thickness, we can ensure that the coating is evenly applied and functioning as intended. Applying a ceramic coating to this already impressive paint layer enhances its durability and gloss, ensuring the Challenger looks its best on every drive.
